Blackening is the process to increase rust resistance of steel parts with black appearance. The surface of the steel is oxidized to a dense, smooth ferroferric oxide with a strong oxidizing agent. This thin layer of ferroferric oxide can effectively protect the inside of the steel from oxidation.
